Kati thinks: Thrift Year Recap

2/13/2013 04:38:00 pm

I've been working on this for a few days now - I want to make sure to not forget anything and not jump the gun on it. So, today I share my thoughts about the Thrift Year: for one year, I have only bought second hand clothes, via ebay, in charity shops and on flea markets. I made exceptions for tights, underwear and partly shoes. The whole thing happened accidentally: I had just only been to charity shops, and after half a year was over I though: sod it, I'll complete the whole year!

Shopping in such stores is not for everyone: musty smell, sweat marks on some items and used bikinis require a certain amount of bravery. You hardly ever find what you are looking for, and then always in the wrong size. So, mostly I purchased clothes that were the best in comparison to the rest - also a way to develop your style! But it was important to me that I wouldn't hoard half-nice items. Not one of the items that I have bought in this year I have hardly worn - different to many other clothes I bought in chain stores that were much more expensive (weirdly)!

After my first shopping trip in a mall I came home having only bought one single scarf. The choice was just way too overwhelming for me. I wasn't able to decide anymore between all these clothes. High-gloss polished counters, people carrying loads of bags around me, shirts for 15 € that looked as though they wouldn't even survive one wash. In some stores it smelled of perfume, in others purely chemical.

Outfits mostly from second hand stores

In this moment, I longed for my tiny, musty charity shops, with funny salespeople and customers from all age groups. Here in Germany, you hardly ever have this kind of store opposite to Great Britain (for new readers: I studied in London the past year) - over here, there are mostly second hands such as Humana that have raised their prices massively in the last few years I think. Of course, it is all for a good cause - but who really buys a used H&M skirt for 10 €? No one. And with that, those shops shoot themselves in their own foot. But this is another topic.

the only purchase from my shopping trip

Was denkt ihr darüber?

My main motivation was the aversion of the supersaturation of our wardrobes at the expense of many underpaid seamstresses, of the environment through industrial cotton production and transport emissions. I don't want to hurt or offend anyone, I'm also not a holy person, mainly have H&M and Primark in my wardrobe and am happy about a good bargain. Just thinking a bit more whether I really need the 15th cardigan or 12th jeans, I certainly do that now. What do you think about that?

  1. I try and focus on smaller brands and boutiques instead of big box, fast fashion stores (Forever 21, H&M) because I love supporting businesses I love (like local boutiques - they can go out so quickly). It' must have been hard to do only second hand - I have trouble with fit and I am incredibly impatient in thrift stores!

I'm mainly a secondhand thrift shopper, but I think our thrift stores in the States are in better condition from the sound of it..

  7. The fun part about thrift shopping is that you find special pieces. I hate going to the store and liking an item and seeing everyone else wear it (I'm weird like that). So thrift shops work well for me and the prices are so low you can get an entire outfit with out going bankrupt.

  9. You've done really well only purchasing thrift items, you've found some really great pieces!! I need to thrift more, I love it, but I find there isn't very much selection where i live. If I get into the larger city close by there is, but I don't often get too

  10. I LOVE going thrifting. It is my favorite thing. I am still guilty of going out and buying things from chains though... I still love them.
My favorite is finding housewares and other such items in thrift stores. I have seriously found some of my favorite furniture and decor in thrift stores.
Thanks for posting on this subject!

  13. Kati I LOVED this post! I would say I do 3/4 of all of my shopping in second hand stores, if not more. Now that I learned how to sew last year, I can basically just alter the things I find to make it more me (though my skills still need work)! So happy to here you completed such a great challenge for such good reasons!
    Have a wonderful day!

I wear your granddad's clothes, I look incredible, I wear this big ass coat from that thrift shop down the road" :D

  20. That was a real challenge! Love it! In Italy we don't have charity/second hand shops at all :( I sometimes buy second hand clothes on ebay but my friends look at me like with disgust! I think there is a bit of skepticism towards these shops! Anyway I really like the idea and your challenge!!! :)

Since Valentine’s Day is right around the corner I did a Valentine’s Day Heart Nails TUTORIAL!!
Check it out and let me know if you like it!!

  27. Hi Kati, I think its brilliant that you took a thrift year of shopping, its so mush more cost effective and you've scored the loveliest of pieces. We don't have any second-hand stores where I live, I would like to try some of your ideas

  38. Spending a whole year shopping nowhere but in charity shops is extremely admirable - I get very easily frustrated when I can't find what I'm looking for and/or my size, so I know I'd never make it. Good for you! I do think we all need to react to the supersaturation of our wardrobes in some way, though - my goal is to try to buy from independent shop or designers as much as possible. Sometimes you have to make exceptions but it really does change the way you shop and look at purchases when you move away from the high street.
