2 Years of Being Vegan

About two years ago I decided that I want to eat vegan. Before that, I had lived as a vegetarian for several years but a book brought me on the right path. No one who claims to love animals or who even accepts that animals have a consciousness and feelings and can experience pain can consume animal products. Meat is a no brainer and most people can understand that one wouldn't want to eat meat. But what is the matter with milk, eggs, cheese?

Just like any other mammal (and us), cows only produce milk when they are expecting babies. In order to get milk from a cow, she has to be impregnated first - after one or two days after giving birth, the baby calf is taken away from her so all the milk can be used for sale. The calf is either slaughtered or raised, away from its mother, and has to undergo the same treatment as a milk cow when it is old enough to carry babies. On the one hand, the whole procedure is absolutely cruel and on the other hand the following question can be raised: why should a human require the baby food of another species?

Only female chickens are used in the egg production - for the male chicks, there is simply no use and they are either gassed or ground up without anaesthesia. Just disgusting and totally unnecessary. This is why I live the way I live and don't think it's "extreme" at all - what happens in the animal industry is extreme! Animals from small farms are also not cuddled to death and gotten rid of when their production drops. What do you think about it? How do you eat?

P.S.: If now arguments regarding nutrients come up - the plant world contains all (!) nutrients humans need. Yes, even B12. I also recommend the films Earthlings and Cowspiracy as well as this video.

  1. Yes, the degree of animal-cruelty in food-production is unacceptable. People ignore it because it's too awful to face. But it exists whether they think about it or not. Kudos to you for this choice. And you're right about nutrition: most vegans and vegetarians eat much healthier than normal folk.
